Nokia 501: A smart dumb phone?

I have been meaning to write this post for a long time. Only I wasn’t too sure. But now after a almost a year since its launch, I came across many disappointed Asha 501 users. In this post I will include the various reasons why this phone is losing popularity among even the most devoted Nokia fans.

The lack of Multi-tasking as we know it

For the ones still in the dark, Asha 501 does support multitasking. How else do you play Music and browse the Web all at the same time? However multi-tasking in very casual terms means the ability to run multiple programs simultaneously. Some smartphones with a low memory often ‘suspend’ a task that is not active in order to provide more resources to the current task. Those tasks are can be resumed at any time.
In Asha 501, while one does get to run multiple programs (Music player-web browsing or Radio-Facebook etc.), it lacks the ability to run all apps that way. Some apps like Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp and other social apps have a ‘background mode’ that allows them receive notifications. There is no ‘suspended’ state. Apps are always closed. And since you can’t resume it, the next time you click on it, the app loads right from the start.

No Copy-Paste

This one’s a real bummer. Almost all phones these days have this basic feature, yet even after repeated requests it has been ignored. It is absolutely annoying to have to type that web address all over again when you know only a few taps here and there could solve the issue.

The phone however, supports Copy-Pasting files. (Tap and hold, pull-up menu appears, click copy. Then select where you want to Paste).

No Search option

If the lack of Copy-Paste annoys you, this will too. My phone has a 16GB memory card on it and I often tend to use it as a removable drive. Obviously I have many files which aren’t supported on this phone (such as FLAC or RAR files).

Now I cannot send any of these files to any one of my friends unless I manage to find it. So imagine scrolling through a huge list of files on your phone….There are just so many chances of you missing what you want. That is why a Search option is required. Your phone should find what you need not the other way round. Makes life easier. That's why we use gadgets don’t we?

Slow UI

Don’t you just hate it when you try to scroll and the icons barely manage to move? What about when you’re busy WhatsApping -- if only my English teacher was reading this – and the keyboard registers clicks about 6 seconds later? There is also a lot of lag when the Contacts are synching or when something’s being downloaded.

No Mix-Radio

Though users had been promised of Mix radio being included in the latest update (v 1.4) many found to their dismay that this was a regional feature.

No MS Office or PDF support

Though it comes bundled with My Pocket Office, viewing PDF, Excel or Word files are a pain. My Pocket Office is a third party software and requires constant internet connectivity. The results are far from good. Worse the software is just like bloatware and is not well integrated with the OS. Every time you click on a PDF or Office file, an error message says, “Sorry. There's no app to open this file type.”
In order to view it, you have to open the app and use it’s own file browser instead.

Well that's about everything I managed to discover. Some inputs came from friends using the 501 and a few are my own. Let me know if you have anything more to add in the comments below.

I will be moving this blog to a different address soon. Some of the content here is just too stupid so I'm going to change things around.
I'll keep the most read posts (the Fifa Controller fix) and redirect/post the new address.

UPDATE 18-6-2015: New address http://debanu.blogspot.com

I'm having trouble moving the comments but that's thanks to Google updating its security and Disqus lagging behind. Sorry guys.
